I take my list seriously. Restaurants do not make the list without being researched and vetted thoroughly. Thus, it’s very disappointing when a restaurant on the list is a dud, as was the case with The Place on Friday night. I will spare you the details as The Place is not worthy of a full review, but I will share a few of the lowlights.
Our waiter was noncommittal and unhelpful and missed the chance to steer me away from the terrible mushroom risotto (which tasted only of chicken broth) when given the chance. The butter was served in pats fresh from the fridge (butter served at an improper temperature is a pet peeve of mine). The waiter neglected to mention that the restaurant was out of the coffee ice cream that was supposed to be served with the warm chocolate cake; when I complained, he brought us a scoop of sickeningly sweet Heath Bar Crunch ice cream.
In defense of The Place, it’s a very quaint restaurant and most of the dishes (mushroom risotto aside) were fine. For these reasons, I would be willing to give The Place the nod as a good neighborhood spot were it not located in a neighborhood that has so many better options at comparable prices. The Place was not a good start to the dining year – cross it off the list. Happily, Saturday night’s dinner provided redemption. More on that later this week.
